Kenya Talks Recycling at United Nations Ennvironment Assembly

Watamu Marine Association represented by Ezrah Onyangoh the International Coastal Clean Up coordinator for Kenya featured with the Ocean Conservancy at the United Nations Environmental Assembly 22 - 27th May

A great opportunity to talk trash at the #UNEA2 Nairobi, with Ocean Sole marine litter/debris art sculpture exhibitions with Ocean Conservancy from the USA. Also attending were multi nationals, discussion global recycling and waste management recycling policies.

WMA's long time rubbish partners Ocean Sole who produce amazing wildlife recycled flip flop sculptures that are sold around the world also exhibited amazing larger than life installations. Our favorite is a humpback whale in a net depicting the plight of marine life and pollution threats.

Ocean Conservancy from the USA and also WMA's trash partners joined the debate on the global waste marine debris and recycling issues with countries from all over the world. Nick Mallos for the Ocean Conservancy appeared on a first #UNEA2 Facebook Live Stream

The 2015 International Coastal Clean Up results were published and released to the press. With nearly 800,000 and 8,000,000 tons of marine litter collected worldwide this is an incredible feat. WMA was quoted - "The Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup has inspired Kenyans to take action. In Watamu Marine Park, community based entrepreneurship is turning the tide on marine debris impacting our beaches,? said Steve Trott, projects development manager for Watamu Marine Association and a Cleanup coordinator in Kenya. ?All plastic, glass and flip flop waste is recycled creating a waste recycling value chain. Turning trash into cash along the Kenya coast is creating local solutions to a global problem and generating incomes for impoverished communities" Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Clean Up Report and Press Release 2015/16
